Introduction<\/h3>\n

\nOver the last two weeks we have taken an in-depth look at the GRANT<\/span><\/a> and REVOKE<\/span><\/a> statements. Today I would like to introduce you to a third permission management statement: DENY<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIf you have worked with the DENY<\/span> before, you might get the feeling this post is leading in the wrong direction. Just hang with me, I promise I won't leave you stranded.\n<\/p>\n

DENY Example<\/h3>\n

\nAt first glance the DENY<\/span> statement looks very similar in functionality to the REVOKE<\/span><\/a> statement: It removes an existing permission. Let's look at an example.\n<\/p>\n

\nFirst we need our principal TestUser1<\/span> to have read access to dbo.tst1<\/span>:\n<\/p>\n

\n\"Simple<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nSo far we just used a GRANT<\/span><\/a> in its most simple form. Now let's see what happens when we use the DENY<\/span> statement on the same permission:\n<\/p>\n

\n\"DENY<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe DENY<\/span> statement causes an existing permission to be removed. We have seen that before, REVOKE<\/span> works the same way.\n<\/p>\n

\nLet's see if a DENY<\/span> maybe prevents a re-grant:\n<\/p>\n

\n\"GRANT<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nIt does not. Even after a DENY<\/span> was executed we can just execute a GRANT<\/span> to give our principal access to the securable again. That also does work the same way as the REVOKE<\/span> statement.\n<\/p>\n

\nBut look, the error TestUser1<\/span> got after we executed the DENY<\/span> explicitly states that the SELECT<\/span> permission was \"denied\". Maybe there is a hint in that error message. Let's see what error we get after executing a REVOKE<\/span>:\n<\/p>\n

\n\"REVOKE<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nDarn it - that is exactly the same error message. So it very much looks like REVERT<\/span> and DENY<\/span> are just synonyms.\n<\/p>\n

DENY is not the same as REVOKE<\/h3>\n

\nIf you just look at a single securable and a single principal in isolation, there is indeed no functional difference between the REVOKE<\/span> and the DENY<\/span> statements. However, once you start looking at hierarchies of securables or hierarchies of principals, they actually have a very different functionality.\n<\/p>\n

\nTomorrow we are going to look at the DENY<\/span> statement in the context of hierarchies of security principals.\n<\/p>\n

Summary<\/h3>\n

\nWhen looking at a securable and a security principal in isolation there is no discernable difference between REVOKE<\/span> and DENY<\/span>. However that is not the full picture, as the next two posts will show. Make sure to come back once they are posted over the next two days.\n<\/p>\n
